Project 365: Day 3

With frozen ponds and frigid temperatures, aside from curling one competitive sport matches the climate perfectly up here in Alaska; and that's Hockey. Last night Casey, a friend Ben and I went to support the Nanooks, the hockey team of University of Alaska Fairbanks, in their second game against Northern Michigan University's Wildcats. With only six minutes left in the third period the Nanooks #23, who's team is down by three, attempts to even the board with a desperate shot for a goal. No such luck. At the final blow of the horn Alaska lost to Northern Michigan 1-4.

Project 365: Day 2

With the sun now rising just after 10am, morning walks for Reef get pushed back a bit. The colors painted by the sun when it does eventually come up can be stunning, and because of the sun's low angle on the horizon, those pinks and oranges last all day. Situated just south of the arctic circle Fairbanks is not a land of perpetual darkness, but with only 3:30 hours of daylight on the winter solstice, it gets pretty close.

Project 365: Day 1

This blog has been hijacked for a new purpose. I've sprouted roots and moved to the great state of Alaska with my partner Casey and dog Reef. No longer will I be writing about "Life Away From Home", the old title of this blog. Instead I've decided to post a single image of everyday Life @ Home, each day, for the next 365 days. The goal here is to experiment with new ways of making ordinary subjects compelling and unique, as well as to showcase my photography in a format other than Facebook. For my first submission, a simple exploration into depth of field from our deck.

Fairbanks has been lacking substantial snow for a while. With only six inches on the ground since October, skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts have been on edge waiting for relief...until now. Finally a few nights back the clouds opened up and dumped several inches of fresh powder on our deck. It's a start to what hopefully will be a very white winter, with more dustings in the forecast over the next week.
