I think the 1.4 extender is a great cost effective way of adding extra magnification. I have heard people notice a degradation in image quality with the 2x, but with the 1.4x I don't notice any difference. The only downside of course is it decreases the max aperture of your lens by 1 stop; my 70-200mm f/4 becomes a 98-280mm f/5.6. Yes, it's a non-IS. Are you upgrading for the Aleutians?
Yuppers. Abram steered me away from the 100-400 and suggested I talk to you about this setup :D I've been looking at used lenses, looks like there is a substantial price jump between the non-IS and IS f/4....thoughts, how's the handholdability without IS? Same with the extender, the newest version (iii) is pretty shiny and new and improved yet a lot of money, but is the i or ii sufficient. Hurray fieldwork...now to finish that thesis defense...
what are your thoughts on this lens extender combination? (also, you have the non-IS f/4?)
